Lot numbers and traceability
A lot number is the thread that connects a vial, its certificate, and your own records. Here is what a lot is and why each one is documented separately.
A lot is a single batch of material produced and tested together as a unit. Traceability is the ability to follow that lot from the certificate back to the vial in your hand, and forward into your own records. The lot number is what makes this possible, because it is the one identifier shared by every part of the chain.
Why testing is per lot
Each production lot is sampled and analyzed separately, and its results are written into a certificate keyed to that lot number. Testing per lot, rather than per product line, means the document describes the exact material that was made and tested together, not an average or a representative example from another batch.
How the link works
The same lot number appears in three places: printed on the vial, recorded on the Certificate of Analysis, and, ideally, written into your receiving records. Because the certificate on a product page corresponds to the lot currently in stock, matching the printed lot to the document confirms that the analytical data applies to your material.
Looking up a lot
Certificates are addressable by lot. The COA index lets you search the registry by lot or compound and open the canonical certificate for a specific lot. If you are holding a lot received earlier and need its paperwork, the lot number alone is enough for support to retrieve the matching certificate.
